Reflections on Week 1 of the CSA

This week was the first week of boxes for the CSA. Our members received 2 quarts of delicious, organically- and locally-grown strawberries from WiseAcres in Centreville. John Wise tells us that the strawberry season will probably be a short one, due to all of the rain we’ve been experiencing. Our members also received some garlic scapes, a bag of spinach, a bag of Bon Vivant mesclun lettuce mix, some radishes and a few sprigs of mint. It was a slow start but as we know from previous years, the variety and quantity of items in the boxes will pick up very quickly!

Tuesday is our delivery day for our Napanee members. Like last year, Cam waits at the Lions Club Park from 3 – 5 pm for our members to arrive. For anyone who can’t make it by 5 pm, he takes the remainder of our boxes to Seasons Fine Foods on Dundas Street, where our members have until 7 pm to pick up their boxes. We are very grateful to Pat at Seasons for allowing us to do this. She has a beautiful store full of delicious food so if you haven’t visited her yet, I strongly recommend that you do so! I have a hard time finding Tamari in Napanee but Pat has it! She also has some amazing Red Fife Wheat flour, locally grown and ground in Madoc, Ontario.

Thursday is our day for Tamworth, Centreville and other local delivered boxes. Once again, Hans & Carolyn at Bon Eco are generously allowing us to use their large building as a drop off/pick up spot for our Tamworth members. Valerie at the Centreville General Store has kindly offered her store as a pick up spot for our Centreville members and we are grateful to her for providing this service! Cam and I recently enjoyed a delicious pizza from Valerie’s store and she has a wide range of other items available. Next time you are heading through Centreville, be sure to stop in and see what she offers.

Don’t forget that there are lots of recipes on the Recipe Page of this site, using many of the items in our boxes. Garlic Scape Pesto, Fresh Strawberry Pie and Strawberry Spinach Salad are just three of the recipes you could use this week!
